BATIK: REPEAT SHAPES IN A WINTER PALETTE ON CLOTHES

In this hands-on workshop, we will explore repeat patterns on paper and fabric. In this workshop we will deepen our understanding of various mark-making techniques by creating our own stamps, and drawing with tjantings on silk and cotton. You will also learn how to prepare your own clothes and fabric to paint with natural dyes, and everyone will work on their own article of clothing throughout the weekend.

In this hands-on workshop, you will create a variety of coloured fabric samples from traditional natural dyes and local dyes using the immersion dyeing method. We’ll explore over-dyeing and modifying our colour samples using Iron and Indigo.   I will talk about which dye plants grow in our region, and how and when to harvest them for dyeing. We will discuss how to prepare protein/cellulose fibres and fabrics to best accept natural dye and then we will print with thickened mordants and then dye them to create a variety of colours and patterns. We will prepare an Indigo Vat and do a couple shibori techniques on class samples and the garment of clothing you bring.

The fabrics we will be working on within this workshop are cotton, silk, and linen. You will go home with lots of colour samples, knowledge, and the ability to dye clothes, fabric, and yarn on your own using natural dyes

The fabrics used in this workshop are cotton, silk, and linen. The participants will go home with colour samples from the colour wheel, and the ability to dye clothing, fabric, and yarn on their own using natural dyes.

In this hands-on workshop, we are going to play around with thickening different tannins, printing with thickened Iron and overdyeing in Indigo.  We will also extract a few colours from various plants and find something fun to do with them. This is a random class designed to build on top of basic natural dye knowledge.  The focus is on printing and surface design techniques while better understanding how tannins affect your dyeing experience.

In this workshop, we will make natural dye and thicken it to use for stenciling and stamping onto cotton, using stencils we make from recycled plastic bag fabric. We will make a variety of colors from plants, and also mordants. Once we have a little pile of samples we will overdye the patterns in Indigo, Madder and Iron. Natural Dyes are amazing and diverse! From the various plants to harvest locally (even in your kitchen) to the variety of colours you can get from just one plant, Natural Dyes are pretty mind-blowing!

This workshop will be an exploration in making and using Natural Dye Extracts to print and paint on fabric. We will use the Natural Dye Extracts on stretched silk with a batik resist, then thicken the extracts so that we can block print, stencil and paint on cotton and linen.

We will also discuss and play with printing with mordants and overdyeing in a dye bath.

In this one hour workshop we will work with various shapes and sizes of yarns, different crochet hook sizes and experimental increasing and decreasing to create a one of a kind “knozler”. Your knozler will probably end up being 3 dimensional and remind you of how much fun you had in this workshop. You do not need to know how to read patterns to take this workshop. It is a very fun and playful workshop to help you learn to crochet out of your usual patterns and how to incorporate intuition into your artwork.

Batik Workshop with Botanical Extracts

November 10 & 11th 2018. Cost 200$ + 100$ material fee.

In this two day workshop you will learn how to make botanical extracts to use for painting  fabric, as well as how batik using various tools to apply the hot wax creating layers of beautiful designs between colors.

We will explore both drawing and stamping with hot wax, and making a color palette from nature.

You will go home with samples of patterns, colours and the knowledge the batik process from start to finish.  Each participant will also be given  a small batik stretcher to take home.

This course is for anyone who loves to play with fabric and the fibre artist who is interested in working with botanical dyes.

Indigo dye has been used for thousands of years to dye fabric blue. Indigo is a plant that can be transformed into a dye that provides a vibrant color blue on fabric and yarn.

In this workshop you will learn how to make a couple different Indigo Dye Vats. We will make 2 different vats, one is an organic vat and the other is a strong vat for production dyeing.

You will learn a handful of Shibori patterns to tie, sew, fold + clamp cotton fabric to make striking prints on cloth. You will go home with lots of samples of patterns and the confidence to build your own INDIGO Dye Vat at home.

Exploring Indigo + Natural Dyes

April 7 + 8th, 2018 from 10am- 4pm total cost 200$ + 50$ material fee.

Come out and learn the magical alchemy of extracting colour from plants to dye various types of fabrics and yarn.  In this two day workshop we will explore making a wide range of colours from plants and over-dyeing some of them with Indigo to get blues, greens and purples.  We will also experiment with thickened natural dyes to blockprint and silkscreen with.  You will leave this workshop with a wealth of knowledge and confidence to dye fabrics in the full spectrum of colours.

This is a beginner to intermediate class level.

We will make a 2 different Natural Indigo Dye Vats from banana’s and one method using fructose powder. We will also make ‘the classic’ an Indigo Vat with lye and thiox.

We will explore a variety of Shibori patterns to tie, sew, fold + clamp cotton fabric to make striking prints on cloth. You will go home with lots of samples of patterns and the confidence to build your own INDIGO Dye Vat.

Dyeing Yarn with Natural Dyes

Fiber & Fabric From the Ground Up

9-11am.  January 27th, 2018.

Cranberry Community Hall, Powell River, BC

In this class we will explore dyeing yarn with one color, using natural dye extracts to dye a variegated yarn and over dyeing yarn to shift the colors.
You will learn how to prepare (mordant) yarn to absorb the most dye and be light fast and wash fast.

We will talk about choosing the right color palette for your projects, harvesting colors locally, modifying colors with iron, and over dyeing in Indigo to achieve beautiful greens and purples.

No experience necessary. Method is transferable to protein fibre based fabric, such as silk or wool.

This is a drop-in fun night. Come make some scarves for the holidays, or just play on some fabric.  There will be a variety of different types of INDIGO vats set up for you to use with fabric you bring from home, or fabric/scarves you purchase from me.  The price is sliding scale based on how much fabric you dye. If you do want to dye more than 4 metres of fabric, please send me a message ahead of time so that I will can make enough INDIGO.

Printing with Natural Thickened Dyes

October 14 & 15th, 2017 from 10am-3pm total cost 200$ + 50$ material fee.

Natural Dyes are amazing and diverse. From the various plants to harvest, to the variety of colours you can get from just one plant, Natural Dyes are pretty mind blowing!  In this workshop we’re going to explore another exciting way to use Natural Dyes. Mixing natural plant powders with natural dye extracts to thicken the dyes so that we can stamp, stencil and silkscreen with them.

The class will run through how to best prepare your cloth to accept dye and keep the dye through washing and sunlight, mordanting, then we will make Natural Dye Extracts and thicken them so that we can explore printing on fabric using stamps, stencils and silkscreens.

No experience in Natural Dyeing Required.

Cost: 200$ + 50$ material fee

Bring; a lunch, rubber gloves and wear clothes than can get dirty.

Dyeing cotton with Indigo is just plain magic. In this workshop we’ll look at different traditional Shibori patterns to tie, sew and fold into fabric to make striking prints on cloth.  We’ll make a few Indigo Vats and try different Shibori patterns on cotton. You’ll go home with lots of samples of patterns and the confidence to build your own Indigo Vat this summer. Feel free to bring one article of clothing.  Bring rubber gloves, a lunch + a friend! Natural Dyes are amazing and diverse! Natural Dyeing: Plant + Principle

May 20 + May 21st 2:30-6pm

@ The Arts Building in Gibson’s, BC

In this two-day workshop you will learn what natural dye plants grow in our region, how and when to harvest them for dyeing, a brief history on plants used to create vibrant lightfast colours, how to prepare protein/cellulose fibres and fabrics to accept the most colour from natural dyes (mordanting), and how to make a natural dye bath to use for immersion dyeing. We will work on various fabrics and fleece.

Please bring a book to take notes, a pair of rubber gloves, clothes that can get dirty and a snack.

Stamp Making & Printing on Paper + Cloth

In this fun, informative, hands-on workshop we will explore different ways to make your own stamps out of erasers, potatoes and recycled materials. If you enjoy working with paper or fabric, learning how to make and print with stamps can add great variety to your work. Lino Cutters will be provided; however, if you own one, please bring it to the class.

Bookbinding 101

In this hands-on, fun class you will learn the basic bookbinding stitch. We will be making books using a variety of recycled paper bags, paper, and other materials. We will make lots of small books that you can use for recipes, lists, poems, quotations and letters. Materials list will be available at registration.

Screen Printing on Fabric

Learn how to make an image into a silk screen and print it onto fabric. I will explain how silkscreens can be made and then demonstrate printing on fabric. We will talk about various mediums to use to print on fabric for lasting results. Everyone will have a chance to make something, and go home with a patch-size screen print.
